Military Secrets For Extreme
Cold Weather Survival
with Jeff Anderson from https://www.WarriorLife.com/
Your Bugout Bag (BOB) Is Your Core
• Everything we need to survive should be just
inside of your bugout bag.
• It can provide for you both inside and
outside your home.
Keep Your BOB In Your Vehicle
• Many people die of exposure in their
vehicles when they get stranded.
• At home, take it out of your trunk and you
have the gear you need.
Staying Warm
• Power
o Power is great for heat if you have it, but it
isn’t necessary. Many people die from
carbon monoxide poisoning because they
bring a gas generator inside the home or
too close to a window.
o Solar power is better and safer. I have two
solar systems that produce enough juice
for me to use a small microwave.
• Shelter
o Reduce the size of the area you need to
warm up.
o Set up a camping tent.
o No tent? A poncho and a mylar space
blanket can make a “hooch” fort.
• Space Heater
o I prefer the Mr. Heater “Little Buddy,”
which uses small propane canisters.
(Have these on standby for cooking and
heat.)
• Huddle
o Put sleeping bags together, or use
blankets, and surround them with mylar
space bags or blankets taped together to
combine your heat at night for sleeping.
• Keeping Your Body Warm
o Wool clothing is best; layers of
polypropylene is like magic.
o Exercise helps, but the worst time I had in
the 10th Mountain Division was keeping
my hands and feet warm enough. This
was before handwarmers. Avoid the
disposable ones and go with the high-tech
rechargeables. I recommend having some
for every family member, with some
extras tucked away.
Basic Resources
• Water
o Stored water comes in helpful, but you
can’t depend on it. Melted snow may help,
but it may go away. Make sure you can
MANUFACTURE your own treated water.
o Unless you’re in the desert, there will be
some “wild water” you can find and
filter/sanitize. I recommend an inline filter.
• Food
o Building your food stores is critical.
Food4Patriots is one of our sponsors and
provides great mobile options.
o Have an alternative cooking source, too.
• Sanitation
o Your own toilet, trash bags, and kitty litter
will do the job.
